Western Province vs Sharks Predictions
This is going to be a battle between two sides not willing to give an inch. I expect a very tight affair but home ground advantage should see Western Province pull off a narrow victory.
- Western Province have won their last 3 matches.
- Western Province have won by 12 or less points in 4 of their last 5 victories against the Sharks.
- Sharks have lost their last 2 away matches.
Head to Head
This is normally a very tight encounter with Western Province leading 6-4 over their last 10 matches. The Sharks won 32-27 at home when they last met in the 2019 Currie Cup.
Western Province Form
Western Province finished the Currie Cup round robin stage in second place on 37 points. Overall it has been an up and down season for the Blue & White stripes but they pulled it together when it really counted.
Province won three of their five Currie Cup matches with the last one ending in a nail-biting 31-29 victory at the Cheetahs. The Cape Town-based outfit were dominant in the first half but allowed the Cheetahs to come back in the second.
It was only with the last kick of the game that Tim Swiel managed to secure Province the four points required to make the semi’s.
Prior to that encounter, Western Province won 28-14 against the Pumas and 34-17 against Griquas. Both matches were played at home.
Western Province and the Sharks were meant to play the final round robin fixture but COVID-19 intervened to have the match suspended.
Western Province Injuries & Team News
Chris van Zyl is likely start at lock ahead of David Melhuizen after being rested in the last match.
Scarra Ntubeni may have to do with a place on the bench in the semi final while Nethling Fouche is also fit again.
The Sharks finished third on the Currie Cup table which sees them travel to Newlands for their semi-final. It has been a season inconsistency at the Sharks but they have the quality to beat anyone on their day.
The one concern for the Sharks will be is that they have not played any competitive rugby for three weeks. Their last match saw them beat Griquas 47-19 at home after being humbled 37-10 by the Cheetahs.
The Sharks should have played Western Province twice this season already, but both matches were called for due to COVID-19. But expect this to be a tight and reasonably low scoring affair at Newlands.
Sharks Injuries & Team News
After having to abandon their last round robin match due to COVID-19 infections within the squad, the Sharks are back to full health.
They are also clear on the injury front according to reports so Sean Everitt has a full squad to pick from.
