Wellington are favourites at home with an 11-point handicap. While I fancy the hosts to win, Taranaki have a strong side and had a superb 2023 season. I’m backing the visitors to get inside that handicap.

Wellington have won three of their last four games against Taranaki. Last season Wellington won 31-25 at home.

Wellington topped the table in the 2024 NPC but lost out in the semi-final. They were the best side in the tournament but that upset will still haunt them.
This year they began with a performance at Eden Park, beating Auckland 29-21 in a tightly contested affair. While the hosts stayed in touching distance, Wellington always looked the superior side and they showed in late on.

This is another tough fixture for Wellington. They are likely to stick to the same side as far as possible.
Taranaki Form
Taranaki had a very strong 2023 season in the NPC and will be looking for a repeat in 2024.
There is little reason to doubt them after a very good showing at home in round one. Taranaki beat Counties Manukau 31-15 but it could have been so much more comfortable given the opportunities wasted.
However, it was the first game of the season, and they should only improve. This is a tough test that awaits in Wellington though.
