Leinster vs Cheetahs Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

A severely weakened Leinster welcome the Cheetahs to the RDS Arena for a Pro 14 clash. Leinster are missing up to 11 internationals so the value lies firmly with the Cheetahs this weekend. The handicap market is in play while we shouldn’t ignore the possibility of an upset.

Leinster Form

Leinster are unbeaten in 10 Pro 14 games this season and beat Connacht 54-7 at the RDS Arena in their last match.

With the handicap set at 19 points for this match, generally you’d back Leinster to cover that against the Cheetahs but missing 11 top players could cause disruption. Last season at the RDS Arena the Cheetahs were outplayed but only lost 19-7.

On that occasion Leinster rested a few players but not as many as they will be missing this week. Leinster remains favourites but it will be risky business backing them in this one.

Leinster News

Leinster will be missing 11 players who have stayed with the Ireland squad for a training camp. They include Ross Byrne, Robbie Henshaw, Tadhg Furlong and Jonny Sexton.

Ireland have released a few fringe players for game time with Luke McGrath, Will Connors and Dave Kearney returning for Leinster.

Cheetahs Form

The Cheetahs are having a fine season and sit third in Conference A of the Pro 14. With the possibility of a playoff spot looming the Cheetahs will desperately want something out of this game.

It is difficult having a stop-start season but the Cheetahs handled it with two wins over the Kings in their last two matches – the last one ended in a 45-0 victory to the Cheetahs at the Free State Stadium.

While the Cheetahs record in Europe isn’t great they have taken a losing bonus point (lost by 7 or less points) at Connacht and Scarlets. That coupled with the fact that Leinster are missing a huge amount of international players gives me confidence that the Cheetahs can cover the +19 handicap.

Any team missing that amount of quality could struggle so a small layout on a Cheetahs victory at 8.00 makes sense.

Cheetahs News

The Cheetahs have a full bill of health. Head coach Hawies Fourie will likely revert back to Ruan Pienaar starting at scrum-half considering his knowledge of the conditions.

Leinster vs Cheetahs Head to Head

Leinster and Cheetahs share one win each in their two previous encounters. Both sides have won their home match with Leinster beating the Cheetahs 19-7 at the RDS Arena when they last clashed in 2019.

Leinster vs Cheetahs Betting Odds

Leinster are very short priced at 1.07 with the Cheetahs at 8.00 for the win. A draw will pay 41.00. The line for the handicap is drawn at 19 points with Leinster paying 2.00 and the Cheetahs 1.83 to cover it.

In the winning margin market the Cheetahs can be backed at 13 to win by 1-5 points while Leinster are priced at 6.00 to win by 11-15 points.

Leinster vs Cheetahs Match Up

The Cheetahs are a formidable side at home but in Europe their tactics are not up to scratch. They are used to the hard, dry fields of South Africa so the European winter is not made for them.

That said they have adapted enough recently to show a competitive edge which will stand them in good stead against a weakened Leinster outfit.

Leinster are missing 11 internationals and this offers the Cheetahs an opportunity to cover the 19 point handicap. A win for the Cheetahs would be a big upset but it's worth the risk with the odds on offer.
