Ireland vs Japan Predictions
Japan are more than a competitive side and will offer Ireland plenty of threat, especially if conditions are dry. At home Ireland should have enough to win but we’re backing Japan to lose by less than 15 points.
- Ireland are missing a number of key players.
- Ireland have won their last 3 matches.
- Japan beat Ireland 19-12 in their last match.
Head to Head
Ireland lead Japan 7-1 in their eight previous matches. It is however Japan who won their last encounter 19-12 at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.
Ireland have won six of their last nine international fixtures and come into this off the back of a good finish to the 2021 Six Nations.
Over their last two matches, Ireland have beaten Scotland 27-24 at Murrayfield and England 32-18 on home soil. Ireland will however be wary of the Japanese threat considering Japan beat them 19-12 at the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
The Irish have lost a number of players to the British & Irish Lions Tour so this should be a very competitive fixture. At home Ireland will however fancy their chances.
Ireland Injuries & Team News
James Ryan will captain the Irish while Peter O’Mahony and Josh van der Flier start on the side of the scrum. Caelan Doris makes his debut in the back-row alongside those two.
In the absence of Jonny Sexton and Conor Murray, Jamison Gibson Park and Joey Carbery will start as a halfback pairing. Only five starting players featured in Ireland’s surprise loss to Japan in 2019.
Japan are still on a high after their incredible feats at the 2019 Rugby World Cup where they made the quarter-finals. They are by some distance the most improved side in world rugby and not far from gaining top tier status.
Unfortunately due to the pandemic, Japan has not had much rugby since the World Cup. In preparation for their match against the B+I Lions game last weekend, Japan beat club side, Sunwolves 32-17.
Against the Lions, Japan understandably didn’t put in their best performance but were still competitive. In the end they lost 28-10 but it would have given them much needed game-time coming into this fixture.
Japan Injuries & Team News
Japan’s squad from the Rugby World Cup is largely intact. They started 10 players last week against the Lions and we expect to see a similar lineup this weekend.
