New Zealand vs Ireland Predictions

Ireland were definitely not 23 points worse than New Zealand last Saturday. Both teams were good but it was an outstanding defensive effort from the hosts. This weekend could easily be a lot tighter, as last Saturday should have been.

My best bet is for Ireland to get within 15 points.

  • New Zealand have won their last 5 home matches.
  • New Zealand have never lost at home to Ireland.
  • Ireland have won 3 of their last 6 matches against New Zealand.
  • Ireland have key players returning from injury.

Head to Head

New Zealand and Ireland have shared three wins apiece over their last six matches. Ireland have however never won in New Zealand and last week the All Blacks were 42-19 winners.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand got their international season off to a superb start, beating Ireland 42-19 in the 1st Test at Eden Park. With two matches to play, another home win will secure the series before the final fixture.

The All Blacks went into the first Test of the season as a bit of an unknown quantity. Not because they lack quality but the first Test of the season is always unpredictable.

A slow start for the hosts would have been a bit worrying but once they got going, Ireland had no answer. There were many things that fell New Zealand’s way during the match though so I expect the 2nd Test to be a bit closer.

New Zealand Injuries & Team News

Jack Goodhue, Will Jordan and David Havili all missed the first match after testing positive for COVID. Their availability for this week has yet to be confirmed.

Ireland Form

Ireland had a very good Six Nations earlier in 2022, finishing second only to France. The French were also the only side that beat Ireland with the other four all comfortably beaten.

During November 2021, Ireland were even more impressive, particularly in their victory over New Zealand. The tables however turned in the 1st Test against the All Blacks where Ireland went down 42-19.

Ireland started well with a try but their defensive effort let them down later in the first half. It must be said that the scoreline was not particularly kind as Ireland played well and were over the All Black line four times but were held up.

The bounce of the ball certainly fell New Zealand’s way in the first fixture. Ireland will need to tidy up some of their errors and defence but the rest was pretty good. They will be very competitive come Saturday.

Ireland Injuries & Team News

Andy Farrell will have a few more options this week. Jonny Sexton is expected to be fit. Rob Herring, Harry Byrne, Mack Hansen and Finlay Bealham are also all back in the selection mix for the second Test.

Verdict

Ireland were not as poor as the score suggests in the first Test. They are good value to get within 15 points of their hosts this week.
