France vs Italy Predictions

France should cruise to victory at home in this fixture but the 26 handicap is very steep. The French have not been quite themselves in the opening two rounds, and I expect Italy to be far better this week than against Ireland. I am backing the visitors to get within 26 points.

France have won their last 14 matches against Italy. During the Six Nations last year, France won 29-24 in Rome, but they met again at the Rugby World Cup. The French, on home soil, destroyed Italy 60-7 on that occasion.

France Form

France are fourth on the Six Nations table after one win and one defeat in the opening two rounds.

On the opening weekend, France produced a poor performance at home as they lost 38-17 to Ireland. While they had a man sent off, the hosts were never in that game with 15 men.

Les Bleus bounced back in round two, beating Scotland 20-16 at Murrayfield. While it wasn’t a perfect performance from the French, they did start to show signs of the team that we’ve seen over the last few years.

Antoine du Pont is missing the entire tournament, but France still have a world class squad. This is a game they may look to rest some players despite enjoying a two week break between games.

Italy Form

Italy lost all five games in the Six Nations in 2023 but were impressive regardless. They pushed all comers to the end and should perhaps have had a victory.

The World Cup late last year didn’t go that well, although Italy were in a very tough group. That said, much was expected of them this year.

In the opening round, the Italians came within a score of beating England at home. They lost the game 27-24 but there was enough there to show what a threat they could be in 2024.

Last tie out they were however completely outplayed by Ireland in Dublin. The hosts cantered to a 36-0 win, so Italy will be looking for a big improvement this time around.

Italy will almost certainly pick a full-strength lineup on Sunday. They need to compete to gain some confidence again.
