Six Nations 2020 Top Point Scorer Contenders

Owen Farrell (England)

England’s Owen Farrell finished the 2019 Six Nations as the top point scorer with 59 points. He is the only player to have won the golden boot twice in the last five seasons.

Over the last seven Six Nations, Owen Farrell has finished within the top three points scorers on five occasions. The only times he didn’t was in 2018 when he didn’t play all the matches and in 2015 when he didn’t play at all.

As captain Farrell is likely to start all the matches and is coming off the back of a season where he kicked over 80% of his goal-kicks. Owen Farrell is rightly the outright favourite.

Dan Biggar (Wales)

Wales fly-half Gareth Anscombe finished the 2019 Six Nations as the second highest point scorer but misses it this year through injury. Dan Biggar replaced him as the starting World Cup fly-half in 2019 and as one of the best goal-kickers in the world he cannot be dismissed.

In 2016 as the Wales starting fly-half Biggar finished 3rd in the point scoring ranking for the Six Nations but the problem is he isn’t assured of a place in the team. His all-round game isn’t the best so he is unlikely to start every match.

Leigh Halfpenny (Wales)

While countryman Dan Bigger is among the top goal-kickers, Leigh Halfpenny is arguably the most accurate kicker in world rugby. But much like Biggar, Leigh Halfpenny is not a definite starter with Liam Williams rated among the top full-backs on the global stage.

It would be a huge risk going with Halfpenny at this stage considering that.

Jonathan Sexton (Ireland)

Jonathan Sexton has taken over the Ireland captaincy so will probably start all their games. His injury record is what is of concern to me though. If Sexton gets through the entire Six Nations injury free he is most certainly a decent option.

In 2014 Jonathan Sexton won the top point scorer award in the Six Nations but has only come close on one other occasion since, that being in 2018 when he finished 3rd, six points behind France’s Maxime Machenaud.

Romain Ntamack (France)

Romain Ntamack is firmly France’s starting fly-half and goal-kicker but he has fluttered between brilliance and the absurd in his short career. France are not expected to challenge for the Six Nations title so for Ntamack to end as the top point scorer will require a couple of big scoring games.

Adam Hastings (Scotland)

Adam Hasting may be a decent outside bet. Scotland shouldn’t compete for the Six Nations title but they will be competitive in all their matches with plenty of points on offer. Regular first choice fly-half Finn Russell has been dropped from the squad for disciplinary reasons.

With Russell gone Adam Hastings should be the starting fly-half and goal-kicker, however it is not confirmed whether Russell will return later in the competition. You may want to wait till that is confirmed before making a call on this one.

Other contenders

England’s George Ford finished as the top point scorer in 2015 but that was a year in which Owen Farrell was injured. Much the same he will only really have a chance of Farrell suffers injury again.

Italy’s Tommaso Allan is first choice and a solid goal-kicker but he will be reliant the team providing enough scoring opportunities for him.

France’s Thomas Ramos will need injury or form to knock Romain Ntamack off his perch before he gets the opportunity to be the team goal-kicker.
