Six Nations 2020 Top Try Scorer Betting Tips

Jonny May is the favourite to be the 2020 Six Nations as the top try scorer ahead of Wales’ Josh Adams and France’s Teddy Thomas. Whether May will play all the games during the Six Nations is debatable but Adams, barring injury, should feature for Wales.

Six Nations 2020 Top Try Scorer Contenders

Jonny May (England)

England’s Jonny May goes into the 2020 Six Nations as the favourite to end as the top try scorer. In the 2019 Six Nations May showed superb form scoring six tries to end as the top try scorer but no player has won it twice in a row for the last seven seasons.

At the World Cup in 2019 May only managed three tries but it should be worth noting that all three of his tries came in their final three matches. England should be able to provide him with enough opportunities but my concern is that he may be rested against Italy as Eddie Jones looks to bloody some young players.

Josh Adams (Wales)

Josh Adams is the form winger in the Six Nations at the moment. The Welsh flyer was brilliant at the 2019 Rugby World Cup as he cut through defences with regularity, finishing as the top try scorer at the showpiece even with seven tries.

Barring injury Adams should start all of Wales’ matches which should give him the opportunity to win the award. Last season Josh Adams finished with three tries in the Six Nations but that is where he made his name.

Teddy Thomas (France)

Teddy Thomas scored three tries during the 2018 Six Nations but hasn’t really threatened since. His try scoring pedigree at club level is impressive but with France it is a different story. France are not going to get the dominance regularly enough to see their flying winger get across the line regularly.

Should it be a low scoring season then Thomas could come into play. 2018 and 2019 were high try scoring seasons with the winner scoring seven and six respectively however the five seasons prior to that saw three or four tries top the charts. Should we return to those numbers a lot of players could potentially win it.

Jacob Stockdale (Ireland)

Jacob Stockdale was magnificent in the 2018 Six Nations as he finished as the top try scorer with seven tries. It was a season in which Ireland were completely dominant but he’ll struggle to achieve those numbers again in an Ireland side going through a bit of transition.

Damian Penaud (France)

Damian Penaud will struggle with the same issues as countryman Teddy Thomas. France just aren’t dominant enough to provide their wingers with enough opportunities. Penaud will be reliant on a low scoring season or a big day out against Italy to top the scoring charts.

George North (Wales)

George North is a great outside bet for the punter. Consistency is his middle name but North’s highest scoring Six Nations season thus far has been three tries. On one previous occasion (2015) that was enough to see him finish joint second.

George North a strong runner and has the ability to destroy any defence but it how he’s used that has cost North in the past. Under previous coach Warren Gatland, George North was used to set up play for the team from first phase ball.

His strong running style was suited to that as he got over the advantage line but North’s try scoring will never be high enough if he’s used in that manner. Others benefit of course. Whether that will change under new coach Wayne Pivoc remains to be seen.

Outsiders

England’s Anthony Watson could prove popular in this market. Should he play all of England’s matches he is definitely in with a shout.

England’s Manu Tuilagi plays at centre which is an unlikely position to see as a top try scorer. Backing him is a risk but who knows what can happen if he scores big against Italy, Scotland or France.

Wales’ Gareth Davies is a high scoring scrum-half but three or four tries is his likely highest. A low scoring season could see him sneak in.

Ireland’s veteran Keith Earls finished the 2017 Six Nations as the level top try scorer with three. He scored three last year too but can he go higher? I can’t see three or four being enough to win it outright.
