Wales vs Italy Preview

Wales are favourites at home but the seven-point handicap seems very friendly given the form of the two sides. I am backing Italy to get within seven and perhaps win their second successive game at the Principality.

  • Italy have lost just 1 of their last 4 matches by more than 8 points.

Head to Head

Wales have won 17 of their last 18 matches against Italy. Last season, the Welsh were 29-17 winners in Rome but Italy won 22-21 the last time they played at the Principality.

Wales Form

Wales have been poor in the Six Nations once again with four defeats from their four games. They are bottom of the table with just three points and will require a comfortable win or bonus point win to go above Italy.

In round one Wales lost by a point at home to Scotland before going down by two points to England. Both of those were decent performances, but since then they have struggled.

Round three saw Wales lose 31-7 in Ireland although they stayed in the game for large parts of it. Last week, Wales were looking good at one point against France, but let the French run away with the game at the end, losing 45-24 at home.

Wales Injuries & Team News

Wales will want to get at least one win as Warren Gatland continues to rebuild his side. He will make changes after last week though.

Italy Form

Italy have continued their upturn in form during the Six Nations and can possibly move up to fourth if they beat Wales. The tournament started with a home 27-24 defeat to England before Ireland beat Italy 36-0.

At the end of February, Italy will still be disappointed that they didn’t beat France in Paris, but a 13-all draw still says everything that needs to be known. The Italians are certainly no easy beats these days.

Last weekend, at home against Scotland, the Scots started like a house on fire but somehow Italy kept the score within limits. In the second half, the hosts piled on the pressure and won the game 31-29.

Italy Injuries & Team News

Italy will be at full strength once again. This is an opportunity for a big away win against a Welsh side struggling for form and confidence.

Verdict

I am backing Italy to get within seven points with a chance of a win.
