The 2020 Super Rugby season was suspended indefinitely in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
New Zealand Rugby confirmed on 11 May 2020 that the domestic form of Super Rugby involving the Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders and Highlanders would start on Saturday June 13.
The competition was named Super Rugby Aotearoa and will see the five New Zealand Super Rugby clubs playing each other home and away over 10 weeks.
