Blues vs Highlanders Betting Tips & Preview - Blues backed to cover handicap in Auckland

  • Highlanders’ poor 2020 form set to continue in round 3 of Super Rugby Aotearoa
  • Blues enjoying their best season in a decade
Blues vs Highlanders

The Blues host the Highlanders in the third round of Super Rugby Aotearoa at Eden Park on Saturday. The hosts have started with two straight victories, playing at home they look like solid value in the handicap market.

Blues Form

The Blues were in incredible form when the 2020 Super Rugby season was called to a halt in mid-March. Their last three matches ended in victory – first the Blues defeated the Stormers at Newlands 33-14 before beating the Hurricanes 24-15 in Wellington.

In their final game before the season ended the Blues smashed the Lions 43-10 in Auckland. That form has continued in Super Rugby Aotearoa with a 30-20 victory over the Hurricanes at home and a 24-12 win in Hamilton against the more fancied Chiefs.

Blues News

The Blues do not have any serious injuries to contend with this weekend. Otere Black has performed well at fly-half but Beauden Barrett will surely look to slot into his favoured position sooner rather than later.

Highlanders Form

The Highlanders Super Rugby season was not going according to plan when it was called off for the pandemic. With only one win in five matches, the Otago-based side lost their last two matches before the break 28-22 to the Rebels and 38-13 to the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.

As Super Rugby Aotearoa got underway the Highlanders were widely expected to finish bottom. They however surprised many in the opening week in Dunedin with a last minute drop goal to secure a 28-27 win over the Chiefs.

Highlanders News

The Highlanders had a bye last week and have reported no injury concerns. They are likely to stick with the winning combinations from their last outing.

Blues vs Highlanders Head to Head

The Highlanders hold a 7-3 advantage over the Blues in their last 10 Super Rugby matches. The last time they met was in the 2019 Super Rugby where the Highlanders won 24-12 in Dunedin.

Blues vs Highlanders Odds

The Blues are favourites at 1.25 with the Highlanders priced at 4.00 with bet365. A draw comes in at 26.00.

Blues vs Highlanders Match Up

The Blues showed some defensive lapses last week and will need to improve this week against a well rested Highlanders outfit. Both teams will target the set piece to achieve early dominance which could lead to a stop-start affair early on.
