Bulls vs Chiefs Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Smart recruitment has propelled the Bulls back into Super Rugby’s leading pack. The Chiefs meanwhile look a shadow of their former selves with no wins in five matches.

The two sides clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday and I am tipping Pote Human’s men in the -6 handicap market at 1.91. Rosko Specman is backed for anytime tryscorer.

Bulls Form & Team News

Two tries from Rosko Specman and one from Jesse Kriel saw the Bulls to a 37-14 victory over the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld in their last match. The Pretoria-based side has won all three matches in South Africa this season by 18+ points, the only blemish an away defeat to the Jaguares.

The Bulls are a new look team under the guidance of Pote Human. One new recruit who has shone in particular is Specman.

Having risen to prominence with the Blitzboks, he has adjusted seamlessly to Super Rugby and already has four tries. Specman will be particularly important for the Bulls on Saturday given the injury suffered by fullback Warrick Gelant.

The Bulls can be backed to win at 1.45, the short odds a reflection of their fine start to the season. The Bulls’ trend of winning comfortably in South Africa means there is value in backing them in the -6 handicap market at 1.91.

Chiefs Form & Team News

The Chiefs have had a woeful start to the season with no wins in five matches. Losses to the Highlanders, Brumbies, Sunwolves and Crusaders were followed by a 23-23 draw with the Hurricanes.

The Chiefs have been resoundingly beaten in both away fixtures in 2019. A 54-17 drubbing at the hands of the Brumbies was followed by a 57-28 defeat to the Crusaders. They were also beaten 32-31 away to the Hurricanes in last year’s quarter finals.

Colin Cooper’s men are paying 2.80 for the win if you back them to overcome their away woes and a draw is paying 26.00.

Bulls vs Chiefs Head-to-Head

The Bulls have won seven out of 10 home fixtures against them with one draw. The Chiefs’ last win over Saturday’s hosts in Pretoria came in 2001.

Bulls vs Chiefs Match Up

The Chiefs have conceded an average of 38.8 points in their first five matches. This climbs to 55.5 in away matches, a concerning figure given the Bulls’ attacking capabilities. Rosko Specman is the tournament’s joint fifth highest tryscorer and will be licking his lips.

Bulls vs Chiefs Key Statistics

  • Bulls have covered the -6 handicap in all 3 matches in South Africa this year (Super Rugby).
  • Bulls’ Rosko Specman has scored 4 tries in 4 matches (Super Rugby).
  • Chiefs have won 0 of their last 6 matches (Super Rugby).
  • Chiefs have lost 2 of their 2 away matches in 2019 by an average of 33 points (Super Rugby).
  • Chiefs have not beaten the Bulls in 7 away matches (Super Rugby).

The Bulls’ fantastic form in South Africa is in stark contrast to the Chiefs’ woes on the road. I am therefore backing the hosts in the -6 handicap market at 1.91.

Rosko Specman is likely to add to his four tries in four matches against a dodgy defence. The Bulls winger is tipped for anytime tryscorer at 1.95 and first tryscorer at 9.50.
