Chiefs vs Blues Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

The Chiefs will look to bounce back as they host the Blues at the FMG Stadium in Super Rugby Aotearoa. The Blues have been impressive in 2020 but have struggled against the Chiefs historically, so I’m backing the hosts to win a close encounter.

Chiefs Form

The Chiefs have been inconsistent in 2020 but still have many of the most talented players on their roster. In the opening round of Super Rugby Aotearoa the Chiefs suffered a last minute 28-27 defeat to the Highlanders in Dunedin.

It was a see-saw battle throughout with both teams showing their lack of competitive game-time by making numerous errors. The strict officiating didn’t help the flow of the game either.

This hampered the Chiefs deadly attack but I expect them to adapt far better in the second week back. Anton Lienert-Brown will be a key figure at inside centre while Damian McKenzie remains one of the most exciting players on the world stage.

Kaleb Trask struggled at fly-half for the Chiefs. That could see former All Black fly-half Aaron Cruden make his first start for the Chiefs since returning from Europe.

Blues Form

The Blues were showing great signs earlier in 2020 during the now abandoned Super Rugby season. Upon their return to action as New Zealand’s Super Rugby Aotearoa got underway last week, the Blues saw off a strong Hurricanes outfit 30-20 at Eden Park.

Otere Black was magnificent at fly-half while new signing Beauden Barrett started at full-back. The two combined well to control the tempo of the game and never allowed the visitors much daunted attack to get going.

Despite the Blues' improved form they did go down 37-29 to the Chiefs at Eden Park in the first week of the 2020 Super Rugby season.

Blues News

The Blues are unlikely to tinker too much with their side. Beauden Barrett, a fly-half by choice, should remain at full-back considering the impressive performance of Otere Black.

Chiefs vs Blues Head to Head

The Chiefs have a 15-1 advantage over the Blues in their last 17 matches along with one draw. The last time these two met was on 31 January 2020 where the Chiefs won 37-29 at Eden Park.

Chiefs vs Blues Odds

The Chiefs are favourites for the win at 1.80 with the Blues priced at 2.05 with bet365. A draw can be backed at 23.00.

In the winning margin market the Chiefs are paying 2.87 to win by between 1-12 points while the Blues can be backed at 3.50 to win by the same margin.

Chiefs vs Blues Match Up

Both the Chiefs and Blues play a ball-in-hand type of rugby so this promises to be a high-scoring encounter.

Much depends if the officials allow the game to blow, but if they do I expect to see the likes of Chiefs Damian McKenzie and Blues Beauden Barrett to cause havoc among in the defensive lines.
