Chiefs vs Hurricanes Preview & Betting Tips

The Chiefs host the Hurricanes in a pivotal Round 19 Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes this Friday at FMG Stadium in Waikato.

Looking for three consecutive wins, the Chiefs are set to bridge the gap between the Hurricanes and Crusaders at the top of the New Zealand Conference.

The Chiefs have hit top form at the right time this season after posting consecutive wins leading into this all-important Round 19 match. With a 45-22 win over the Highlanders and a 24-19 win over the Brumbies last week, the Chiefs look set to make waves into the Crusaders lead.

Trailing by 13 points, the Chiefs securing the top spot is out of reach but they sit only five points behind the Hurricanes and the winner of this match on Friday will be well-positioned to make a run into the Super Rugby playoffs.

Exciting play from the likes of Damian McKenzie and the return of All Black Brodie Retallick will see the Chiefs tough to beat at 2.35, despite the lack of support from punters in the early betting markets.

The Hurricanes have scored only two wins from their last five games, with both wins coming against the hapless Auckland Blues. That's not exactly the form of a team with premiership aspirations and there are signs of concern for the Hurricanes.

Recent losses to the Crusaders, Highlanders and Brumbies have put the 'Canes on the back foot but it was a nice performance against the Blues last week, winning 42-24 with an impressive second-half display.

This is a Hurricanes team capable of beating any team on any given day but we're yet to see the consistency needed to confidently back them at odds of 1.60. The line should be split at 1.87 and punters are not getting value with the visitors.

Match Up

The history between these two sides has been relatively even throughout history. Chiefs have won three of the last five against the Hurricanes, with their most recent win coming in 2017 when winning 17-14 in Wellington.

Hurricanes got the better of the Chiefs earlier this season when winning 25-13 in Wellington but the Chiefs have the decided advantage when playing in Waikato. They have won seven of the last eight matches against the Hurricanes at home and only a couple of those matches were close.

The Hurricanes have struggled on the road, losing their last three matches.

Key Statistics

  • Chiefs have won seven of the last eight matches against the Hurricanes.
  • Chiefs have lost only two of their last nine games at FMG Stadium.
  • Chiefs have scored 20 points or more in their last five matches.
  • Hurricanes haven't won on Chiefs home soil since 2009.

We can see why the bookmakers are siding with the Hurricanes, given their talent and the form from the likes of Ngani Laumape last week, but the value is with the Chiefs.

The home side is tough to beat in Waikato and they have shown enough in their wins over the Brumbies and Highlanders to suggest that they can head back to the Super Rugby finals.

Best Bet: Chiefs to win @ 2.35
