Chiefs vs Reds Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips
The FMG Stadium in Waikato awaits the Chiefs and Reds in what promises to be a close encounter, if not the most exciting. Both teams are having a poor Super Rugby season with the Reds particularly average away from home. I am tipping the Chiefs to win at 1.35 and for them to do it between 1-12 points at 2.70.
Chiefs Form & Team News
The Chiefs seemed to have found some form over the last two months with a six game run in which they only lost once but last week they were back to their habits from early season. They went down to the Blues 23-8 at Eden Park.
It was a performance reminiscent of their poor early season form. They are missing the creativity of All Black Damian McKenzie who suffered a season ending injury a few weeks ago.
Despite having a poor season the Chiefs will have enough to get over the line against the Reds. The hosts are priced at 1.35 for an outright win over the Queenslanders but there is good value in the points difference market. I am tipping the Chiefs to win from between 1-12 points at 2.70.
Reds Form & Team News
The Reds form has been poor throughout the 2019 Super Rugby competition. Slight hope for a playoff place remains but I wouldn’t be placing much hope on them even coming close. Despite the odd glimpse of brilliance the overall poor displays have overshadowed it.
They come off the back of two straight defeats, albeit close encounters, having lost 30-24 to the Melbourne Rebels before going down 40-32 to the Waratahs at the Suncorp Stadium last week.
The Reds managed to score five tries but their season has been determined by their defence which has been poor overall. Despite the Chiefs struggles this season their attack remains a potent threat which the Reds will struggle to contain.
In an encounter where both sides lack confidence the Reds can be backed to cause an upset at 3.25 while a draw pays 26.00.
Chiefs vs Reds Head to Head
The last six games between the Chiefs and the Reds have been won three each but the Chiefs have won the last three encounters home and away. Not only have the Chiefs won the last three, they have won them all by 24 or more points but it is worth noting that this Chiefs team is a far cry from the side of the last few seasons.
The Reds last beat the Chiefs in New Zealand in 2013. That was the Queensland sides more dominant years but they are some way off that now too.
Chiefs vs Reds Match Up
The Chiefs have not been the same team we’ve seen in Super Rugby for the last 6 years. To say they have underperformed would be generous. Their attacking game just hasn’t come together while they have also been unlucky with the injury to Damian McKenzie.
On the other side the field the Reds have been just as poor. The only difference being that the Reds have been an average team for a few years now so expectations were low. Both sides come into this clash low in confidence.
Chiefs vs Reds Key Statistics
- Of the Chiefs 4 wins in Super Rugby 2019 only 1 win has not been between 1-12 points.
- Chiefs have won their last 3 games against the Reds in Super Rugby.
- Reds last 2 defeats came by less than 12 points in Super Rugby 2019.
- Reds have lost on the last two occasions they played the Chiefs in New Zealand.
The Reds have been poor away from home this season and they have lost their last two games. The FMG Stadium is not a happy hunting ground for the Reds either so I am tipping the Chiefs to win at 1.35 and for them to do it between 1-12 points at 2.70.
