Hurricanes vs Blues Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

The Blues travel to Wellington this Saturday to play the Hurricanes at the Cake Tin in the final round of Super Rugby before the playoffs. All the talk is of the Hurricanes resting players this week, so I am tipping the Blues to cover the +9 handicap while an upset victory could be on the cards.

Hurricanes Form & Team News

The Hurricanes left South African shores with two superb wins under their belt. Last week they comprehensively dealt with the Lions at Emirates Airline Park 37-17.

Ben Lam and Dane Coles scores two tries apiece as the Canes ran riot in Johannesburg. Jordie Barrett took over the kicking duties, adding 12 points as Beauden Barrett missed the match due to late illness.

There is a twist to this week’s match though. The Hurricanes will enter the Cake Tin against the Blues knowing they are secure of a home quarter final. With that knowledge and a few injury worries, the Hurricanes are very likely to rest numerous players.

Top try-scorer Ngani Laumape is definitely out as it is his All Black rest week while James Blackwell, Reeds Prinsep, TJ Perenara and Ardie Savea are possible absentees.

The Hurricanes are very short at 1.30 in the win market and can be backed to cover the -9 handicap at 1.90. I am going in the opposite direction due to the possibility of players being rested.

Blues Form & Team News

The Blues have failed to win a game in their last three encounters, losing narrowly to the Crusaders before a draw with the Bulls. Perhaps their most disappointing result was last weekend when they visited the Suncorp Stadium to face the Reds.

After leading 21-15 at the break and looking in command of the match, the Blues produced a second half display and lost 29-28. Scrumhalf Augustine Pulu scored a brace while Otere Black added eight points with the boot.

The Blues have not been clinical enough recently but they come up against a Hurricanes side likely to rest key players as they prepare for the playoffs. I see value in the Blues to cover the +9 handicap at 1.90 while I’ll take a dip at the Auckland-based outfit getting an upset win at 3.75.

Hurricanes vs Blues Head to Head

The Hurricanes are unbeaten against the Blues in their last seven encounters. The last time they visited the Cake Tin in 2016 the Blues lost 37-17.

Hurricanes vs Blues Match Up

Like most New Zealand derbies this promises to be an exciting clash between the Hurricanes and Blues. They both play an attacking style so expect a high scoring match, weather permitting.

The Blues have mainly struggled to contain teams up front but they will again rely on Otere Black and Ma’a Nonu to lead their attack.

Hurricanes vs Blues Key Statistics

  • Hurricanes are likely to rest several key players for this match.
  • Hurricanes had to travel back to New Zealand from South Africa this week.
  • Blues have covered the +9 handicap in their last three matches (Super Rugby).

I am tipping the Blues to cover the +9 handicap against the Hurricanes at the Cake Tin. The Blues can also cause an upset and defeat a weakened Hurricanes side with little to play for.
