Hurricanes vs Jaguares Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

The Hurricanes have five Super Rugby wins in a row heading into Friday’s match against the Jaguares at the Westpac Stadium. Home advantage should help John Plumtree’s team blow the Argentines off the park and they are backed in the -15 handicap market at 1.91.

Hurricanes Form & Team News

The Hurricanes claimed their fifth win on the trot with a 22-12 away triumph over the Blues. Tries from Ben Lam, Jordie Barrett and Beauden Barrett saw John Plumtree’s team over the line.

Captain TJ Perenara and assistant coach Carlos Spencer both suggested after the win that the Hurricanes were not yet satisfied with their level of performance. The drive to improve even with results in their favour is one reason why the Hurricanes have been one of only two truly consistent teams this season.

The Canes are unbeaten this season bar two defeats to table-topping defending champions the Crusaders. Those aside, the team from Wellington has won nine and drawn one of 10 fixtures.

It is no surprise then that bookies rate the Hurricanes as odds on favourites with John Plumtree’s men paying 1.17 for the win. I am tipping the Hurricanes in the -15 handicap market at 1.91 due to their consistency and home advantage.

Jaguares Form & Team News

The Jaguares went down 32-27 in the first match of their Australasian tour on Saturday. With visits to the Waratahs and Reds still to come, Gonzalo Quesada’s men face a difficult run-in in the race for top spot in the South African Conference.

The standard has been significantly lower than that of the New Zealand Conference. No team in the South African Conference has yet reached 30 points whilst the Crusaders are on 47 and the Hurricanes on 40.

Indiscipline has often cost the Jaguares dearly including in their most recent match. The team from Argentina cannot afford to repeat errors which gifted late penalties to the Highlanders against an even more dangerous side.

The Jaguares will be up against a team that has qualified for the playoffs four times in a row and so an away win is paying big odds of 5.50 and a draw 41.00.

Hurricanes vs Jaguares Head to Head

The Hurricanes and the Jaguares have only met twice before with the Hurricanes winning 40-22 at home in 2016 and 34-9 away last year.

Ben Lam, Ngani Laumape, Matt Proctor, Vince Aso and Blade Thomson all scored tries for the Hurricanes in Argentina. Home advantage significantly increases their advantage of a repeat victory.

Hurricanes vs Jaguares Match Up

It is unclear whether or not the Hurricanes will rest any players come Friday but they have demonstrated their strength in depth throughout 2019. Ngani Laumape has scored eight tries this year and Wes Goosen seven.

Matias Orlando is the only Jaguares player among the top 10 tryscorers this year, sitting joint 10th with six.

Verdict

The Hurricanes are likely to extend their winning run against the Jaguares and prove that they and the Crusaders are a cut above the rest once again. I am tipping John Plumtree’s men in the -15 handicap market at 1.91.
