Inconsistent Hurricanes may struggle after tough tour

Hurricanes vs Sharks Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

The Hurricanes welcome the Sharks to the Wespac Stadium for their first home match of the 2020 Super Rugby season. Momentum is with the visitors while the Hurricanes have blown hot and cold in their opening two matches. After last week’s victory over the Highlanders, the Sharks look a tasty prospect to cover the handicap.

Hurricanes Form

The Hurricanes started their season with an atrocious performance against the Stormers at Newlands as they suffered a 27-0 defeat. They rectified that with a 26-23 victory in Buenos Aires last week but the performance was hardly inspiring.

The Jaguares were the better side throughout, bar for the opening and final 10 minutes but it was enough to hand them an unlikely win. The Hurricanes still have a quality outfit but the loss of Beauden Barrett has had a huge impact on their attacking game.

The Wellington-based outfit have done more travelling that any other side in the opening three weeks which could lead them to rest players. At 1.40 the bookmakers favour them but I suspect that has a lot to do with the Sharks' history in New Zealand rather than current form.

Hurricanes News

The Hurricanes have no reported injury concerns but New Zealand franchises have been resting some of their international players in the opening weeks. After a lot of travel the Canes’ may choose to rest some this week.

Sharks Form

The Sharks have won their opening two matches of the Super Rugby season against the Bulls and Highlanders. Last week the Sharks achieved something not many South African sides achieve – they won on their first week of tour in New Zealand.

The 42-20 victory over the Highlanders in Dunedin will give the Sharks huge confidence going into the match against the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes have gone from the pathetic to the brilliant during their two opening games but they'll need more than a solid performance to get past a confident Sharks outfit.

I’m going to back the Sharks form and momentum to cover the +6 handicap at 1.90 while a second successive victory in New Zealand should not be discounted at 3.10.

Sharks News

Springbok wing Sbu Nkosi has returned home after suffering an injurty last week but Madosh Tambwe is a very capable replacement. No further injuries have been reported.

Hurricanes vs Sharks Head to Head

The Hurricanes have beaten the Sharks in four of their last five Super Rugby matches. In 2019 the Hurricanes travelled to Durban and beat the Sharks 30-17 at Kings Park.

Hurricanes vs Sharks Betting Odds

The Hurricanes are priced as favourites at 1.40 with the Sharks valued at 3.10. You can get a draw at 23.00. The handicap is set at 6 points and will pay 1.90 both ways while the HT/FT market may offer value with the hosts at 1.87 and the Sharks at 4.35.

Hurricanes vs Sharks Match Up

The Sharks and Hurricanes are in for an almighty battle among the forward packs. This is an area that the Sharks will target considering the amount of players the Hurricanes have lost in the off season.

Last week the Sharks produced an all-round game that hasn’t been seen in recent years. Curwin Bosch is  an exceptional attacking fly-half and has started the season well, but the Hurricanes will target his channel on defence with strike runners.
