Champion of Champions History

The Champion of Champions began in 1978 and was created by boxing promoter Mike Barrett. The inaugural tournament was contested by four players at the Wembley Conference Centre in London, England with Ray Reardon beating Alex Higgins in the final.

The event was not held in 1979 but was played in 1980 at the New London Theatre in Drury Lane, London with 10 players competing. Doug Mountjoy beat John Virgo in the final.

The Champion of Champions was abandoned due to poor audience numbers which made the tournament financially unsuccessful.

The tournament was revived in 2013 by Matchroom Sport and it replaced Premier League Snooker on the calendar. The new format saw the Champion of Champions contested by 16 of the world's leading snooker players.

The 2013 and 2014 tournaments were won by Ronnie O'Sullivan. He did not defend his title in 2015 which was won by Neil Robertso after the Australian defeated Mark Allen in the final.

In 2016 John Higgins beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 10-7 in the final. O'Sullivan made the final again in 2017 when he was beaten by Shaun Murphy. Ronnie O'Sullivan won the Champion of Champions again in 2018 after beating Kyren Wilson in the final.

Neil Robertson won the tournament for the second time in 2019 after defeating Judd Trump in the final.
