History

The Scottish Open began in 1981 as the International Open and in 1982 the tournament became the second ranking event after the World Championship.

In 1998 the tournament was renamed to Scottish Open and in 2003 was moved to Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh. After the 2004 tournament Sky decided not to renew their contract and the event was dropped.

The Scottish Open returned in 2012 as minor-ranking tournament and was held at Ravenscraig as the fifth event of the European Tour. After three years without the tournament, the Scottish Open returned in the 2016/17 season.
