Selby rode his luck at times in a 9-6 victory over Yan Bingtao in the Tour Championship quarterfinals. 

Bingtao established a 3-1 lead that could have been 4-0, but Selby took over with breaks of 99 and 119 after the break midway through the afternoon to lead 4-3 and went on with the job.

Mark Allen began 2020 with Round 1 defeats in the Masters and World Grand Prix. He reached Round 3 at the Welsh Open before a Round 1 exit in the Shoot Out.

The world number five withdrew from the Gibraltar Open but participated in the Championship League. He drew 2-2 against Martin O'Donnell before 3-1 wins against Michael White and Nigel Bond. It wasn’t enough to progress to the semifinals by a one frame deficit.

Allen beat Shaun Murphy 9-8 in the Tour Championship quarterfinals despite Murphy scoring six century breaks. The players were level at 4-4 with breaks of 100 and 131 helping Murphy move 7-5 ahead.

Allen was 8-7 down but fought back to win the last two frames. Allen has now reached the semi-finals of seven tournaments this season.
