Aryna Sabalenka won the J&T Banka Ostrava Open in October after beating Victoria Azarenka 6-2 6-2 in the final. The 22-year-old followed up by winning the Upper Austria Ladies Linz in November, defeating Elise Mertens 7-5 6-2 in the final.

The 4th seed won her first three matches in Abu Dhabi in straight sets. Sabalenka beat Polona Hercog 7-5 6-2, Ajla Tomljanović 7-5 6-4 and 15th seed Ons Jabeur 6-2 6-4. 

The World No. 10 then beat 6th seed Elena Rybakina 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarter-finals. 

Sabalenka got past 9th seed Maria Sakkari in the semi-finals, winning 6-3 6-2. She won an impressive 82.8% (24/29) of her 1st serve points and 68.8% (11/16) of her 2nd serve points, allowing just three break points and saving two.

Kudermetova took on Marta Kostyuk in the semi-finals. She prevailed 7-6 6-4 despite landing just 46.5% (40/86) of her 1st serves and winning 39.1% (18/46) of her 2nd serve points, allowing six break points and saving two.
