Adelaide International History
Adelaide hosted the World Tennis Challenge since 2009, an exhibition event featuring past players. The establishment of the Brisbane International had seen Adelaide miss out on hosting an ATP or WTA lead-up event to the Australian Open.
The introduction of the ATP Cup and the abolition of the Hopman Cup in 2020 saw a restructuring on the tennis tours with enough room in the calendar for the Adelaide International.
In February 2019 the South Australian Government announced it would invest $10 million in a roof over the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre. The announcement came after securing a five-year deal with Tennis Australia to host the Adelaide International.
The inaugural Adelaide International was held in 2020 with Andrey Rublev winning the ATP Adelaide International and Ashleigh Barty winning the WTA Adelaide International.
The 2020 Adelaide International was a combined WTA Premier and ATP 250 event.
