Joao Fonseca Form

Joao Fonseca delivered a highly impressive performance to blow away the more experienced local player, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, in the first round of the ATP Buenos Aires tournament.

In his first-ever match at this tournament, Fonseca showcased the exceptional level of play he displayed during December 2024 and January 2025, which had made him a sensation. This high level of performance proved too much for Etcheverry to handle.

Fonseca created nine breakpoint opportunities and converted four of them, while facing just two on his own serve throughout the match. He maintained control from start to finish, securing a commanding 6-3, 6-3 victory.

He is now one win away from reaching his third quarterfinal on the main tour. His previous two runs to the quarterfinals also came on clay. One at home in Rio de Janeiro last February and the other in Bucharest a few months later.

Federico Coria needed some luck to enter the main draw of ATP Buenos Aires after losing in the final qualifying round, but he made the most of his second chance by comfortably defeating Hugo Gaston to advance to the second round.

As usual, Coria has already spent considerable time on clay in the early stages of 2025, and his match against Joao Fonseca will be his 12th of the year. He recently reached the quarterfinals twice at Challenger events and is now aiming to achieve the same result on the main tour this week.

Prior to this week, Coria had only twice advanced past the first round in Buenos Aires, and on both occasions, he made solid runs, reaching the quarterfinals in 2022 and the semifinals in 2024.
