Holger Rune Form

Holger Rune's early-season run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open showed signs of resurgence and rebuilding confidence. However, he soon encountered obstacles that left him directionless, a pattern that has persisted for the past 20 months or so.

He lost after being a set up against underdog Hamad Medjedovic in a home Davis Cup tie a couple of weeks ago. More recently, in Rotterdam, he didn’t appear to be in good health and suffered an embarrassing straight-set defeat to clay-courter Pedro Martinez in the second round.

Rune, a former Boys' French Open champion, claimed his most recent ATP title on clay in Munich in 2023. He will be looking to get back on track with strong performances during the South American clay swing.

His previous experiences at this venue in Buenos Aires were brutal, to say the least. He was outlasted by Albert Ramos Vinolas on his debut in 2021 and struggled with cramps and physical issues in a straight-set defeat to Sebastian Baez in 2022. Both campaigns ended in the first round.

Mariano Navone Form

Mariano Navone kicked off his South American clay swing a few days ago with a straight-set victory over compatriot Francisco Comesana in the first round in Buenos Aires. This marked a successful return to clay, his favorite surface.

Navone is now a mainstay on the main tour and holds a top-50 ranking, thanks to his achievements on clay during his breakthrough season in 2024. The highlight of his success was a runner-up finish in Rio de Janeiro (ATP 500) during this part of the season.

Having lost in the first round on his Buenos Aires debut last year, Navone has no points to defend this week. Any progress he makes in the coming days will ease the pressure before he heads to Rio de Janeiro, where a challenging campaign could significantly impact his ranking.
