Atlanta Open Tennis History

There was a men's tennis tournament played in Atlanta from 1973-1974 called the Atlanta WCT.  The the Atlanta WCT was part of the WCT Tour and played on outdoor clay courts in 1973 and 1974 and on indoor carpet courts in 1975 and 1976. There was another similarly named tournament called WCT Atlanta which was a WCT tournament played in the 1980s.

The tournament was previously held in Indianapolis, Indiana from 1988 before the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) purchased the license. This was due to low ticket sales and inability to attract top players. In December 2009 the ATP sold the license to a group in Atlanta, Georgia, with the tournament relocating to Atlanta in 2010 and held at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Prior to 2010 Atlanta had held a tennis tournament known as the Verizon Tennis Challenge from 1992 to 2001. The Verizon Tennis Challenge was held at the Atlanta Athletic Club and included tennis legends such as John McEnroe, Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick and Pete Sampras as champions.

The Atlanta Open was known as the Atlanta Tennis Championships in 2010 and 2011 when it moved from the Atlanta Athletic Club to the Racquet Club of the South in Atlanta. BB&T became the main sponsor in 2012 with the name changing to the BB&T Atlanta Open.

Since 2012 the BB&T Atlanta Open has been held in Atlantic Station in midtown Atlanta with temporary courts constructed around the retail and residential area's central park. The tournament is usually played during July not long after the Wimbledon Championships in anticipation of the US Open.
