ATP Dubai Tennis Championships History
The Dubai Tennis Championsip was first played in 1993 an ATP event. The inaugural event was won by Czech Republic’s Karel Novacek after defeating Fabrice Santoro in the final. The Dubai Tennis Championsip began as an ATP 250 event and was held at the Aviation Club.
A newly erected Dubai Tennis Stadium was erected at the Aviation Club and hosted its first event in 1996.
In 2001 the WTA Tour joined the Dubai Tennis Championships. Martina Hingis won the first WTA tournament that became a Premier 5 tournament in 2009. It lasted three years before moving back to a Premier tournament in 2012.
In 2005 the Dubai Tennis Championships became the third professional tennis tournament to offer equal prize money for men and women and the first non Grand Slam after the US Open and Australian Open.
