Alexander Zverev vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Preview

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is in superb form at the moment, playing some of the best tennis of his career and showing uncharacteristic consistency.

This should help him put up a strong performance here, but his tendency to struggle in crucial moments, along with his inefficiency in holding onto leads and converting chances, means he can’t always be relied upon in big matches against top-tier players like Alexander Zverev.

I expect Zverev to sneak through to the next round, but this match will be close, with tight sets, long games, and possibly a deciding set as well.

Alexander Zverev Form

Alexander Zverev comfortably dispatched an out-of-form Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets to move into the third round at the Madrid Masters.

Before this month, Zverev had only won seven ATP-level matches in 2025, leading to disappointing results. He missed an opportunity to become world No. 1 in Jannik Sinner’s absence and also lost the No. 2 ranking to Carlos Alcaraz.

However, there has been a positive response and recovery from the German this month, thanks in part to the arrival of a home event in Munich.

Zverev ended his title drought with a victory in Munich last week, and he followed it up with a dominant performance in his Madrid opener, increasing his win tally to 6-0 this month.

The Munich title came at the perfect time, giving him a boost heading into Madrid, one of his favorite tournaments, full of confidence and momentum.

As an added advantage, his main threat for the title, Carlos Alcaraz, has withdrawn from the tournament.

Zverev is a two-time former champion at this event, and with all the advantages he currently holds, it’s up to him to make the most of them and deliver another title run at this venue.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Form

Being the only Spaniard left in the biggest Spanish tournament of the season in Madrid this fortnight, there is naturally a lot of pressure on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He handled it quite well in his first test, easily defeating Nuno Borges.

Davidovich Fokina can be a bit fragile and tends to fold under pressure, so it will be interesting to see how the responsibility of filling in for Carlos Alcaraz to represent a deep Spanish run in Madrid affects his performance in the upcoming matches.

Davidovich Fokina has had some solid campaigns at the Masters level in his young career, but he hasn’t yet had much success at home in Madrid.

He is yet to make a quarterfinal appearance here at the Madrid Masters in six attempts, and his most recent campaign in 2024 ended in the third round, where he lost to top-10 player Andrey Rublev.

Against top-5 players on clay, the Spaniard has a 1-7 record in his career and is currently on a four-match losing streak in such matches, dating back to 2022.

Verdict

Davidovich Fokina is in great form, playing some of his best tennis with rare consistency. However, his struggles in key moments and difficulty holding leads make him unreliable against top players like Zverev.

Zverev should edge through to the next round, but expect a close match with tight sets and possibly a deciding set.
