Alexander Zverev vs Maxime Cressy Predictions

Sixth seed Alexander Zverev has a reputation for playing lengthy matches in the early rounds of Grand Slams. He struggled past Marcos Giron in four sets in the first round.

Against qualifier Maxime Cressy, who has only ever played one top-10 player and lost in straight sets, Zverev should find things simpler. But the German is still likely to go past 33.5 games.

  • 7 of Zverev’s last 10 5-set matches have gone past 34 games
  • Zverev was pushed to two tie-break sets by Giron and broken twice
  • 2 of the 3 Grand Slam matches Cressy has played have gone past 34 games
  • Cressy hit an impressive 26 aces vs Taro Daniel

Maxime Cressy Form

Cressy qualified for the Australian Open via the tournament held this year in Doha, where he scored solid wins over Go Soeda, Yannick Maden and Dustin Brown. He lost to Pierre-Hugues Herbert in three tight sets in last week’s warm-up tournament.

Playing his second Grand Slam main draw after reaching the second round at last year’s US Open, Cressy beat lucky loser Taro Daniel 7-6(1) 7-6(3) 6-4 - a total of 36 games. Two of the three main-draw Grand Slam matches he has played in his career have gone past 33 games.

The Frenchman served an impressive 26 aces against Daniel and only dropped serve once, winning 88% of his first-serve points and 66% behind his second serve. His only previous match against a top-10 player was a straight-sets defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Verdict

Zverev has covered the -5.5 game handicap in three of his last five Grand Slam matches, and eight of his 11 last Grand Slam matches have gone past 33.5 games.

Cressy is serving well enough to be relatively difficult to break which should mean a reasonable length match.
