Ashleigh Barty vs Daria Gavrilova Predictions
After only losing ten points against Danka Kovinic in the first round, Barty will be even more strongly favoured against compatriot Daria Gavrilova.
Gavrilova has only played eight matches since August 2019 due to injury and the pandemic, and has last match against Barty was a one-sided defeat. This dynamic looks due to be repeated as the two Australians face off on Thursday.
- Ashleigh Barty’s last three wins over opponents ranked 51+ came by a margin of seven or more games
- Five of Ashleigh Barty’s last eight matches featured less than 6.5 total breaks of serve
- Daria Gavrilova is 11-26 vs top-10 players but hasn’t beaten one since 2018
- Daria Gavrilova won 40% of second-serve points last time she faced a top-20 player
Head to Head
Ashleigh Barty leads 3-1 in the head-to-head vs Daria Gavrilova.
Gavrilova’s solitary victory came on clay in Strasbourg in 2017 when Gavrilova was ranked in the top 30 and Barty outside the world’s top 80. Since then, Barty has won both matches. Their most recent encounter was a 6-1, 6-2 win for Barty on clay in Madrid in 2019.

Ashleigh Barty Form
Barty made an emphatic statement on her return to the Australian Open. Having reached the semifinals in 2020 but spent much of the past 12 months out of competition, Barty conceded just ten points as she beat Danka Kovinic 6-0, 6-0.
Now on a five-match winning streak after triumphing at the Yarra Valley Classic last week, where she beat Garbine Muguruza in the final, Barty looks formidable.
Compatriot Gavrilova has lost both their previous hard-court matches when the two were of similar rankings. Barty should be able to duplicate her last one-sided win over Gavrilova.

Daria Gavrilova Form
Don’t be fooled by Gavrilova’s current ranking of world no. 387. The Russian-born Australian is a former top-20 player with a healthy 11-26 record against top-10 players. But she did not play for over a year in 2019-20 due to injury and the pandemic.
Since returning unranked last September, Gavrilova has gone 7-3 and beaten three players ranked inside the top 100. Against Sara Sorribes Tormo in the first round, Gavrilova recorded a 6-1, 7-5 victory. She won 50% of her second-serve points, an impressive statistic, but more impressively won 14 of the 20 points played on Sorribes Tormo’s second serve.
However, Barty is a huge step up in class from Sorribes Tormo and has a much more formidable serve as well as an all-court game.
Ashleigh Barty and Daria Gavrilova meet in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday 11 February (2am GMT scheduled start).
