Dominic Thiem won the match of the Australian Open so far when he beat Nick Kyrgios in five dramatic sets. He could be in for another lengthy match when he faces Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round.

Dimitrov is a former semifinalist who has a 3-2 record vs Thiem, although they have only met once since 2017 and Thiem has improved immensely on hard courts since then.

Dominic Thiem Form


After coming close to winning the title in 2020, Thiem returns to the Australian Open as a Grand Slam champion. The reigning US Open winner came past Mikhail Kukushkin and Dominik Koepfer without dropping a set.

Against Nick Kyrgios in the third round, Thiem came back from two sets to love down to win in five, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Surviving a barrage of shotmaking from Kyrgios, Thiem held from 15-40 down at the beginning of the third set and went on to lose only 11 points on serve in the last three sets.

It was Thiem’s second match at the Australian Open this year that has lasted more than two and a half hours.

Dimitrov has played three quick matches at the Australian Open so far. He beat former finalist Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(5), Australian Alex Bolt 7-6(1), 6-1, 6-2 and progressed to the fourth round when Pablo Carreno Busta retired trailing 0-6, 0-1.

The Bulgarian is a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist, including at the Australian Open in 2017. He is only 2-12 vs the top-10 at Grand Slams, but only half of those matches were settled in straight sets. He has never lost to a top-10 player in straight sets at the Australian Open, and will be particularly enjoying these quick courts.
