Dominic Thiem Form
Austria’s Thiem was the form player of 2020 as he reached the final of the Australian Open, pushing Novak Djokovic to five sets and at one point actually leading by two sets to one.
Winning the US Open and reaching the final of the ATP Finals, the 27-year-old Austrian has established himself as the closest thing there is to a realistic rival to Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
However, Thiem has yet to win a completed match in 2021, advancing past Benoit Paire at the ATP Cup after the Frenchman retired after a set and losing 2-6, 4-6 to Matteo Berrettini.
Big-serving Berrettini is a class player, however, and it would be a mistake to read too much into that defeat. The last thing Thiem did before his winning US Open run was to lose 2-6, 1-6 to Filip Krajinovic.
Mikhail Kukushkin Stats
Age: 33 (26 December 1987)
Height: 6’0” (187cm)
World Ranking: 90
Career High: 39 (February 2019)
Career ATP Singles Titles: 1
Mikhail Kukushkin Form
An oft-injured veteran, Kukushkin made the fourth round of the Australian Open back in 2012 but has lost in the first round of every subsequent edition.
Kukushkin went 9-12 through the troubled 2020 season, with his best result a win over world no. 19 Christian Garin in the second round of the US Open.
The 33-year-old warmed up for the Australian Open at the Murray River Open this week, beating world no. 81 Juan Ignacio Londero in three sets before losing to Stan Wawrinka, again in three.
Kukushkin is 4-36 against top-10 players and his victories have not usually come against the strongest of the elite players.
Dominic Thiem and Mikhail Kukushkin meet in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday 8 February (4am GMT scheduled start).
