Dominic Thiem vs Nick Kyrgios Predictions
Kyrgios and the court currently known as the John Cain Arena are a potent combination. The crowd there fuelled him to a match-point-saving, five-set comeback win over Ugo Humbert.
The same court will be the venue for Kyrgios’s clash with third seed Thiem. Runner-up at the Australian Open last year, Thiem’s greater fitness and better physical conditioning should prove the difference between the two men.
- Thiem has never won his first three rounds at a hard-court Grand Slam without dropping at least one set
- Thiem is 6-0 in sets so far at the Australian Open
- Kyrgios is 0-7 vs top-10 players in best-of-five matches on hard courts
- The last two matches Kyrgios won in five sets were both followed by four-set defeats in the next round
Head to Head
The head-to-head between Dominic Thiem and Nick Kyrgios is 1-0 but they have never played a completed match.
In their only meeting so far, on clay in Nice in 2015, Kyrgios retired after seven games.

Dominic Thiem Form
After coming close to winning the title in 2020, Thiem returns to the Australian Open as a Grand Slam champion. The reigning US Open winner has not dropped a set so far in victories over Mikhail Kukushkin 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-3 and Dominik Koepfer 6-4, 6-0, 6-2.
Kyrgios will be a considerable step up in opposition, however, and Thiem’s only comparable match this year saw him lose 2-6, 4-6 to Matteo Berrettini.
Thiem has never won his first three matches at a Grand Slam played on hard courts without dropping a set. While he is much fitter than Kyrgios and should prevail in the end, he will have to be very sharp to avoid being taken to four or more sets.

Nick Kyrgios Form
Kyrgios reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open last year, when he defeated Karen Khachanov in an epic five-setter in the third round before losing to Rafael Nadal in four.
Like many of his compatriots, Kyrgios did not play in 2020 after March when the sport was shut down. He returned to competition last week, beating two players ranked well outside the top 200 before losing in straight sets to Borna Coric.
After a straightforward opening round, Kyrgios was pushed to five sets by Ugo Humbert. He saved match point in the fourth set before going on to win 5-7, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-4. But a three-hour, 25-minute match is not ideal preparation for playing Thiem - not for a player whose discipline and fitness leave something to be desired.
Dominic Thiem and Nick Kyrgios meet in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday 12 February (scheduled to start at 08.00 GMT).
