Jessica Pegula Form

Jessica Pegula has showcased her improved fitness and confidence at the Australian Open. Always a powerful hitter, she is now able to hang in rallies longer and construct points better.

Having beaten Victoria Azarenka, Samantha Stosur and Kristina Mladenovic without dropping a set, Pegula dropped her first set of the tournament against Elina Svitolina. She lost her range in the second set, but rallied to upset the sixth seed 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Pegula is not quite as explosive a hitter as Jennifer Brady, and doesn’t have quite as big a serve. She could find herself hit off the court; that’s how powerful her compatriot is.

Jennifer Brady Form

Jennifer Brady was one of the revelations of 2020. Having shaken up her team and pre-season routine, she won her first WTA Tour title in Lexington and went on to reach the US Open semifinals. It took Naomi Osaka to stop her run.

Brady has become much fitter, and this allows her to unleash her devastating power to its best effect.

A big server, she did not concede a single break point in her first two matches at the Australian Open against Aliona Bolsova and Madison Brengle. Brady was broken once each in her matches against Kaja Juvan and Donna Vekic.

Against Vekic, a big server herself, Brady raced through the first set but had to work harder in the second set for a 6-1, 7-5 victory. It was her first match at the Australian Open which has gone past 16 games.

When Brady lost to Pegula last year, she served at only 52.9%. She has served better than that in six of her last nine matches.
