Magda Linette had a positive start to the year, winning her first three matches at the United Cup before a 6-4 6-2 defeat to World No.11 Madison Keys.

The 30-year-old went to Hobart where she suffered a disappointing first round exit to Alison Van Uytvanck.

The Pole turned that around rapidly at the Australian Open where she has taken out four seeds. She cruised past Mayar Sherif in first round before beating 16th seed Anett Kontaveit 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Linette maintained that form, defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3 6-4, World No.4 Caroline Garcia 7-6 6-4 and Karolina Pliskova 6-3 7-5.

Sabalenka beat Tereza Martincova 6-1 6-4, Shelby Rogers 6-3 6-1, Elise Mertens 6-2 6-3 and Belinda Bencic 7-5 6-2, her serve broken only three times in that run.

The Belarusian’s serve was tested against Donna Vekic in the quarter-finals, but she got it done when it counted to win 6-3 6-2, winning 35% of her 2nd serves and saving 12/14 break points.
