Naomi Osaka vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Predictions

Champion at the 2019 Australian Open, world no. 3 Naomi Osaka has won her last 14 matches including claiming her third Grand Slam title at the US Open in September. The Japanese-Haitian player is one of the big favourites to win the first Grand Slam of the year.

But she faces one of the toughest unseeded players in the draw in veteran Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who has reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open three times in the past four years. Could Osaka go out in the very first round?

  • Osaka has a 15-4 record at the Australian Open and has never lost in the first round in Melbourne
  • Osaka won 3 matches at the Gippsland Trophy last week but pulled out of the semifinals due to injury
  • Pavlyuchenkova has a 34-68 record vs top-10 players
  • Pavlyuchenkova has won her last 4 matches against top-10 players at the Australian Open

Head to Head

The head-to-head between Naomi Osaka and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova stands at 1-1.

Both previous matches were played on hard courts in Asia. Pavlyuchenkova won 6-3, 6-3 in Hong Kong in 2017 and Osaka won 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the Pan Pacific Open in 2019.

Naomi Osaka Form

Osaka is arguably the top favourite for the Australian Open title after winning her third Grand Slam title at the US Open in the autumn.

The world no. 3 is on a 14-match winning streak and has a 15-4 record at the Australian Open where she won the title in 2019, beating Petra Kvitova in the final.

Osaka’s only tournament in 2021 has been the Gippsland Trophy played at Melbourne Park over the past week.

She dropped one set in victories over Alize Cornet, Katie Boulter and Irina-Camelia Begu to reach the semifinals.

But the second seed pulled out ahead of her scheduled semifinal clash with Elise Mertens, saying she had a ‘niggling injury’ she was required to carefully manage.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Form

A top junior who has never broken into the top 10 as a pro, Pavlyuchenkova has nevertheless made six Grand Slam quarterfinals in her career.

She has established a great record at the Australian Open in recent years, making the last eight three of the past four years. She has also won her last four matches against top-10 players in Melbourne.

At the 2020 Australian Open, Pavlyuchenkova beat second seed Karolina Pliskova and former champion Angelique Kerber. But she failed to win back-to-back matches for the remainder of the disrupted season.

Pavlyuchenkova has played two tournaments in 2021, losing early to Ons Jabeur in Abu Dhabi. She then reached the quarterfinals of last week’s Yarra Valley Classic with straight-sets wins over Misaki Doi and Anastasija Sevastova before being crushed 1-6, 2-6 by Garbine Muguruza.
