Novak Djokovic Form

Novak Djokovic extended his winning streak at the Australian Open to 18 matches with a 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Milos Raonic.

The Serb showed some signs of discomfort but did not seem to be hampered in his play as he improved to 12-0 vs Raonic, displaying some typically flawless returning. He hit 41 winners to just 25 unforced errors and though the rallies were limited, he played very well off the ground.

With a 5-2 record vs Zverev, who has never beaten a top-10 player at a Grand Slam, Djokovic has every reason to be confident despite some long matches in Melbourne.

Alexander Zverev Form

A semifinalist at the Australian Open in 2020, Zverev has a habit of playing long matches in early rounds of Grand Slams.

He has broken this pattern in 2021 and only lost one set on his way to the quarterfinals. Zverev has not faced very dangerous opposition, however - his toughest opponent was Dusan Lajovic in the fourth round. Lajovic had pushed Zverev to five sets twice on clay, but on hard courts Zverev won 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Zverev came close to beating Djokovic for the third time at the ATP Cup a few weeks ago. However, he has never beaten a top-10 player at a Grand Slam.

Verdict

Djokovic did not play his best tennis against Raonic, but with two more days to recover, he should be well placed to beat Zverev.

It’s also worth backing a long match as Zverev has often taken top-10 players to five sets at Grand Slams.
