Novak Djokovic began 2025 in Brisbane where he had a strong start, beating Rinky Hijikata and Gael Monfils in straight sets. He was a big favourite in the quarter-finals where he lost to Reilly Opelka.

The World No.7 took some to get going at the Australian Open, defeating Nishesh Basavareddy and Jaime Faria in 4 sets. He improved against two in-form opponents, beating Tomas Machac and Jiri Lehecka in straight sets.

Djokovic was struggling in his quarter-final clash against Carlos Alcaraz. Down a set and hindered by an injury, he took a medical time out and recovered to win 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4.

Alexander Zverev began 2025 at the United Cup, beating Thiago Monteiro and Zhizhen Zhang. He didn't compete in the quarter-finals where Germany were knocked out by Kazakhstan.

The 27-year-old had no problems in his opening three matches at the Australian Open, taking out Lucas Pouille, Pedro Martinez and Jacob Fearnley in straight sets. He beat Ugo Humbert 6-1 2-6 6-3 6-2 in the fourth round after winning 48% of his 2nd serves.    

Zverev registered a 7-6 7-6 2-6 6-1 quarter-final victory over Tommy Paul, saving 7/11 break points.
