Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev Predictions

Novak Djokovic has won 20 straight matches at the Australian Open and never lost a final in eight previous appearances. Daniil Medvedev has won 20 straight matches, 12 against top-10 players and three of the last four against Djokovic.

Even the bookies seem divided on who is the favourite for this one, but Djokovic has been pushed past 40 games in four of his last five matches at the Australian Open as well as in five of his nine previous Australian Open finals. A lengthy physical battle seems likely on Sunday.

  • Novak Djokovic has dropped 1+ sets in 5 of his 8 Australian Open finals
  • Novak Djokovic has played 40 or more games in 4 of his last 5 matches
  • Novak Djokovic has gone past straight sets 5 of his last 7 matches against Daniil Medvedev
  • Daniil Medvedev has won 20 straight matches
  • Daniil Medvedev has won his last 12 matches against top-10 players

Head to Head

Novak Djokovic leads 4-3 in the head-to-head against Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev has won three of the last four matches they have played, including their most recent encounter at the ATP Finals in November.

They have only played once at a Grand Slam, at the Australian Open in 2019 when Djokovic won 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3.

Novak Djokovic Form

Novak Djokovic brings an unbeaten 8-0 record in Australian Open finals into Sunday’s match, along with a 20-match winning streak in Australian Open matches.

The World No. 1 played his finest match of the tournament against Aslan Karatsev in the semifinals, defeating the Russian qualifier 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

It was Djokovic’s first straight-sets victory at this year’s Australian Open since the first round, and he seemed to have entirely recovered his equilibrium and form.

Djokovic won 62% of points behind his second serve against Karatsev, converted six of seven break points and made only 14 unforced errors.

He was facing an opponent who could not compete with him off the ground. It should be a different story against Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev Form

Daniil Medvedev’s straight-sets victories over Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas underlined his dominance over other players in his age group.

The challenge awaiting the Russian is to prove that he can beat Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam - and in an Australian Open final, something nobody has ever done.

Medvedev has enjoyed recent ascendancy over Djokovic, however, and his performance against Tsitsipas was brilliant. In the face of a hostile crowd, Medvedev dropped just seven points behind his first serve and out-winnered Tsitsipas 46 to 19 while making just 21 unforced errors.

Medvedev also regrouped when Tsitsipas retrieved a break in the third set and closed the match out 6-4, 6-2, 7-5, giving himself the best physical chance against Djokovic who has had one more day to rest.
