Novak Djokovic vs Nishesh Basavareddy Predictions

Nishesh Basavareddy is soon to be a Top 100 player and could be a big improver in 2025. Novak Djokovic is a deserved favourite here, but I think this one will be closer than the odds suggest.

Nishesh Basavareddy Form

Nishesh Basavareddy won 49 matches last year, reaching six finals on the Challenger circuit. He won titles in Tiburon and Puerto Vallarta alongside defeats in Bloomfield Hills, Charleston, Charlottesville and Champaign.

The American earned a spot at the Next Gen ATP Finals where all of his matches went to 4 sets. He beat Juncheng Shang but losses to Alex Michelsen and Luca Van Assche saw him exit in the group stage.

The 19-year-old started 2025 by qualifying in Brisbane. He went close in the first round but couldn’t stop Gael Monfils in a 6-4 4-6 6-1 defeat.

Basavareddy qualified again in Auckland where he made it count, beating Francisco Comesana, Alejandro Tabilo and Alex Michelsen in the main draw. He met Monfils again in the semi-finals, going down 7-6 6-4 despite winning 81% of his 2nd serves and saving 1/2 break points.

Verdict

Novak Djokovic has won 10 Australian Open titles and clearly deserves favouritism against Nishesh Basavareddy. Djokovic is not the player he once was however, my money on a closer match than the odds suggest.
