Rafael Nadal vs Laslo Djere Predictions
World no. 2 Rafael Nadal came in as one of the top Australian Open favourites as he tries to win a record 21st Grand Slam title. But the Spanish left-hander did not take the court as planned at the ATP Cup and has had practice restricted by a lower back injury.
If Nadal takes the court on Tuesday against Laslo Djere he will still be heavily favoured to win in straight sets.
- Nadal has only retired twice at the Australian Open
- The Spaniard has reached the Australian Open final four times in the past nine years
- World no. 56 Laslo Djere is on a four-match losing streak
- Djere has won 50% of his matches against top-10 players
Head to Head
This will be the first meeting between Rafael Nadal and Laslo Djere.
Rafael Nadal Stats

World Ranking: 2
Career High: 1 (August 2008)
Career ATP Singles Titles: 86
Rafael Nadal Form
Nadal’s form is difficult to judge. The left-hander was supposed to represent Spain at the ATP Cup this past week, but instead he was supporting his team from the sidelines due to a lower-back issue which has also restricted his practices.
Consequently Nadal hasn’t played a competitive match since losing in the semifinals of the ATP Finals last November.
But it’s worth bearing in mind that Nadal was able to win the French Open in exceptionally dominant style despite having had very little match practice beforehand.
Having come all this way and quarantined for two weeks, Nadal will do everything possible to take the court on Tuesday.
Laslo Djere Stats
Age: 25 (2 June 1995)
Height: 6’2” (188cm)
World Ranking: 56
Career High: 27 (June 2019)
Career ATP Singles Titles: 2
Laslo Djere Form
Djere has scored wins over two top-10 players, Juan Martin del Potro and Dominic Thiem, in four matches - both wins came on clay, the same surface on which the Serbian won both his career titles so far (the Rio 500 in 2019, and the Sardinia 250 in 2020).
The Serbian comes into the Australian Open on a four-match losing streak, but two of those defeats have come as he has retired in matches due to illness and eye inflammation respectively.
However, Djere’s last match did see him defeated comprehensively last week by world no. 109 Kamil Majchrzak.
Djere has a much poorer record on hard courts than he does on clay; he is on a seven-match losing streak against top-50 players on hard courts and is 0-3 in Australian Open first-round matches.
He doesn’t have the power to contend with Nadal in this match if the Spaniard is fit to play.
Rafael Nadal and Laslo Djere meet in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday 9 February (4am GMT scheduled start).
