Federer cruised through the first two rounds in Melbourne, beating Steve Johnson 6-3 6-2 6-2 and Filip Krajinovic 6-1 6-4 6-1. The Swiss star took on Australian John Millman in the third round, Federer improving after an early break in the 5th set to win 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 4-6 7-6.

The six-time Australian Open champion beat Marton Fucsovics 4-6 6-1 6-2 6-2 in the fourth round to set up a quarterfinal clash against World No. 100 Tennys Sandgren. It was an incredible match that will be remembered for a long time.

Federer saved seven match points to complete an incredible 6-3 2-6 2-6 7-6 6-3, saying “You’ve got to get lucky sometimes, I was just hoping that maybe he wasn’t going to smash a winner, if he misses one or two [match points], who knows what’s going to happen? I think I got incredibly lucky today.”

The 38-year-old is fighting against poor form and fitness concerns, requiring a medical timeout in the third set for a groin problem. The match went three hours and 28 minutes and it remains to be seen if those fitness concerns hinder him against Djokovic.
