Serena Williams Form
Winner of a record 23 Open Era Grand Slam singles titles including seven Australian Opens, Serena Williams will always be among the top favourites coming into a major.
But she hasn’t won a Grand Slam since the 2017 Australian Open despite reaching four finals, and her 2020 Australian Open campaign ended in an error-strewn third-round defeat to Wang Qiang.
Injuries have been an increasingly frequent and serious problem for 39-year-old Williams.
Although she won three matches at last week’s Yarra Valley Classic, she pulled out ahead of a semifinal clash with world no. 1 Ashleigh Barty due to a right shoulder injury.
Having a day off to recover between matches will help Williams in Melbourne but if her powerful serve is hampered it will have a serious impact on her game.

Laura Siegemund Form
Siegemund reached the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career at the 2020 French Open but she has lost in the second round of the Australian Open on her last two appearances.
Her best result in Melbourne came back in 2016 when she beat Kiki Bertens and Jelena Jankovic to make the third round.
The German is a classy player with tremendous movement, a versatile backhand and a nice line in drop shots but she has often struggled with injury and lacks some outright power.
She is 2-2 in 2021, having beaten two opponents ranked outside the world’s top 100 - Monica Niculescu and Destanee Aiava - at the Gippsland Trophy last week.
She lost to veteran Kirsten Flipkens in Abu Dhabi and world no. 2 Simona Halep 2-6, 2-4 in last week’s quarterfinals.
Siegemund has lost her last 14 sets played against top-10 players although Williams is currently ranked world no. 11.
Serena Williams and Laura Siegemund meet in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday 8 February (2am GMT scheduled start).
