Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Mikael Ymer Predictions

Fifth seed Tsitsipas came through a very tough five-set battle with Thanasi Kokkinakis to reach the third round and now faces another friend in Mikael Ymer.

However Ymer is not really a player of Tsitsipas’s calibre, and the Greek won their only match so far in one-sided fashion. Saturday’s Australian Open clash should be the same story.

  • Stefanos Tsitsipas has conceded 1 break point in his last 4 matches
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas has won 3 of his last 6 matches against opponents ranked outside the top 50 by 9+ games
  • Mikael Ymer is 0-8 in sets vs top-10 players
  • Mikael Ymer conceded 12 breaks of serve in his last 2 matches

Head to Head

Stefanos Tsitsipas leads the head-to-head with Mikael Ymer 1-0.

Tsitsipas defeated Ymer 6-3, 6-0 on the indoor hard courts of Marseille in February 2020.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form

Tsitsipas has still only conceded one break point in his last four matches, but he did not have an easy match vs Kokkinakis.

The Australian reminded us what a prodigious talent he is as he pushed Tsitsipas to five sets before the Greek won 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-4. Tsitsipas played well generally, but his failure to close Kokkinakis out in the fourth set was glaring. He cannot afford to be as inefficient against Ymer.

Fortunately for the fifth seed, who needs a quick win, Ymer is not as formidable an opponent.

Mikael Ymer Form

A friend and practice partner of Tsitsipas’s, Ymer knows the Greek’s game well but it did not help him when he played Tsitsipas in Marseille last year.

Ymer has performed well on the Challenger circuit and recorded wins over the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Jannik Sinner. But he has never won a set against a top-10 player in three attempts and only one of those eight sets have seen the Swede get more than three games.

Both Ymer’s Australian Open matches so far have lasted over three hours. He beat 26th seed Hubert Hurkacz before ousting in-form qualifier Carlos Alcaraz 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 7-6(5).

Tsitsipas should be much more efficient against Ymer than he was against Kokkinakis.

Ymer has lost two of his three previous matches vs top-10 players by a margin of 9+ games, while Tsitsipas has won three of his last six matches vs players outside the top 50 in 25 games or less.
