Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Rafael Nadal Predictions

Rafael Nadal beat Stefanos Tsitsipas easily in the Greek’s first Grand Slam semifinal two years ago. Since then, Tsitsipas has scored his first win over Nadal, but the record is still solidly in Nadal’s favour.

Despite coming in with a back injury, Nadal has been able to play his way into the tournament and crushed Fabio Fognini in the fourth round. Tsitsipas received a walkover into the quarterfinals - will he be able to convert that physical advantage into victory against Nadal?

  • 3 of the last 4 matches Stefanos Tsitsipas has played against Rafael Nadal have gone past straight sets
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas has a 1-4 record vs top-10 players at Grand Slams
  • Rafael Nadal has won his last 4 Australian Open matches in under 32 games
  • Rafael Nadal has increased his percentage of second-serve points won in each round (Australian Open)

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form

Tsitsipas was taken to five sets in the second round by Thanasi Kokkinakis but restored order with a 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mikael Ymer. He received an unexpected walkover against Matteo Berrettini.

Berrettini withdrew as the result of an abdominal injury, which certainly gives Tsitsipas a physical advantage coming into the match against Nadal.

However, a withdrawal often upsets a player’s rhythm in a way they find it difficult to recover from. This contributed to Tsitsipas’s defeat to Milos Raonic at last year’s Australian Open.

Tsitsipas has not beaten a top-10 player at a Grand Slam since defeating Roger Federer during his breakthrough run to the 2019 Australian Open semifinals. He pushed Novak Djokovic to five sets at the French Open in an impressive display.

Rafael Nadal Form

After pulling out of ATP Cup due to a back injury and coming through his first two Australian Open matches with a modified service motion, Nadal has subsequently been able to serve normally.

The World No. 2 had his toughest match of the tournament against fellow left-hander Cameron Norrie, with two sets going to 7-5 but he has still not dropped a set.

In the round of 16, Nadal beat Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, allowing the Italian little room to display his shotmaking abilities.

Nadal has steadily been winning a higher percentage of second-serve points throughout the Australian Open, a sure sign of growing confidence. He won 69% against both Norrie and Fognini.

Nadal has a 34-8 record in Grand Slam quarterfinals to Tsitsipas’s 2-0.
