Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Thanasi Kokkinakis Predictions

After beating Alex de Minaur and Roberto Bautista Agut at the ATP Cup, Tsitsipas made a bright start to the Australian Open when he crushed Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-2, 6-1.

Tsitsipas is heavily favoured to beat Thanasi Kokkinakis, a very talented player who has gone astray through repeated injury. A partisan crowd is guaranteed to be in attendance which could help boost Kokkinakis' chances.

  • Tsitsipas has conceded 1 break point in his last 3 matches
  • The Greek has won 4 of his last 7 matches against opponents ranked outside the top 20 by -5 games or fewer
  • Kokkinakis has recorded wins over Roger Federer and Milos Raonic
  • Kokkinakis has not played back-to-back best-of-five set matches since May 2015

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form

In three matches in 2021, Tsitsipas has only conceded one break point. He did not face a single break point against Simon in the first round in Melbourne. The French veteran played poorly but Tsitsipas played a very clean and aggressive match, winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 in 92 minutes.

It was the fourth of Tsitsipas’s last five Grand Slam matches which have been settled in 30 matches or fewer. Tsitsipas won 17 of his 23 second-serve points, a particularly impressive stat against a player as good off the ground as Simon.

Tsitsipas usually enjoys massive crowd support in Melbourne, but against an Australian of Greek heritage, the crowd’s loyalties could be more divided.

Thanasi Kokkinakis Form

Few players have been as unlucky with injury as Kokkinakis. The Australian is superbly talented but has only really played two full seasons since 2015 and is constantly trying to make his way back up the rankings.

Kokkinakis did not play a single match in 2020, so it is small wonder that he dissolved into tears after beating Soon-woo Kwon 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the Australian Open.

This will be Kokkinakis’s first match against a top-10 player since beating Roger Federer at the 2018 Miami Masters.

Kokkinakis is a very talented player and there is a decent chance he can keep the score within 6.5 games. Four of Tsitsipas’s last seven matches against players ranked outside the top 20 have had a winning margin of five games or fewer.
