Su-Wei Hsieh vs Naomi Osaka Predictions

Naomi Osaka has dropped only one set so far at the Australian Open, but she has been taken the distance by Hsieh in the vast majority of their matches.

Into her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the age of 35, Su-Wei Hsieh reliably troubles top players at majors, but has been a tricky opponent for Osaka in the past.

  • Su-Wei Hsieh has won 3 of her last 5 Grand Slam matches vs top-10 players
  • 3 of Su-Wei Hsieh’s 4 Australian Open matches have lasted 20 games or fewer
  • Naomi Osaka has never lost a Grand Slam quarterfinal
  • 5 of Naomi Osaka’s 2021 matches have lasted 19 games or fewer

Head to Head

The head-to-head between Naomi Osaka and Su-Wei Hsieh stands at 4-1.

Osaka lost to Hsieh in three sets at the Miami Open in March 2019, but has won all their other matches.

Their most recent encounter saw Osaka win 7-6, 5-7, 6-2 on hard courts in Cincinnati in 2019.

Su-Wei Hsieh Form

Hsieh’s game style is as idiosyncratic as her personality but she is a very dangerous opponent for top players, particularly at Grand Slams. Garbine Muguruza, Simona Halep and Bianca Andreescu have all been taken out of majors by the maddening veteran.

Hsieh has dropped only one set at the Australian Open so far. She beat Tsvetana Pironkova and Andreescu in straight sets before battling past Sara Errani in three.

In the fourth round, Hsieh beat 2019 French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova 6-4, 6-2, producing her best serving performance of the tournament.

Hsieh has only beaten Osaka once, but she has taken the Japanese-Haitian player to three sets four of their five matches. She cannot match Osaka’s power but her ability to take the ball early is unparalleled.

Naomi Osaka Form

Osaka won her third Grand Slam title at the US Open last September and is a former Australian Open champion (2019). One of the favourites for the title, she beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Caroline Garcia and Ons Jabeur - all former Grand Slam quarterfinalists - without dropping a set.

Facing 2020 Australian Open runner-up Garbine Muguruza, Osaka lost her first set of the tournament but saved two match points to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

For the third match at the Australian Open, she won over 50% of points on her second serve. Osaka is playing tremendous power tennis.
