The 2025 Barcelona Open continues tomorrow, a critical clay court event leading up to the French Open. The prestigious ATP 500 tournament is held to 20 April at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona in Spain.

Carlos Alcaraz is full of confidence after winning the title in Monte-Carlo and is the top seed. He was champion in 2022 and 2023 and will be hard to beat this year.

Casper Ruud won the event last year and is one of the players attempting to stop Alcaraz. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alex de Minaur, Arthur Fils and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina lead the list after solid campaigns in Monaco.

Let's delve into the players poised to make a significant impact at this year's Barcelona Open, analysing their current form, recent performances and success in Spain.

Top Contenders

Carlos Alcaraz (ATP Rank: 2)

Carlos Alcaraz enters the tournament as the top seed, aiming for his third Barcelona Open title after victories in 2022 and 2023. He won the Rotterdam Open in February and had a sensational start on clay last week, clinching the Monte-Carlo Masters.

The World No.2 defeated Arthur Fils and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to reach the final where he came back to beat Lorenzo Musetti in 3 sets. With the home crowd's support, he's a strong favorite to reclaim the title.

Casper Ruud (ATP Rank: 10)

Defending champion Casper Ruud returns to Barcelona with confidence, having defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the 2024 final. He won nine of his opening ten matches this year, reaching the final in Dallas but unable to reach a quarter-final in Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami.

Ruud had a poor start to the clay court swing in Monte-Carlo, going down to Alexei Popyrin in the third round. His familiarity with the conditions in Barcelona positions him as a contender to defend his title.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (ATP Rank: 16)

Stefanos Tsitsipas, a four-time runner-up at the Barcelona Open, will be determined to break his finals curse. The Greek won the title in Dubai but was unable to add to his trophy collection in Monte-Carlo.

Tsitsipas got past Jordan Thompson and Nuno Borges but was unable to capitalise on a fast start in the quarter-finals, going down 1-6 6-3 6-4 to Lorenzo Musetti. His expertise on clay and experience in Barcelona gives him an outside chance.

Alex de Minaur (ATP Rank: 7)

Australian Alex de Minaur reached the final in Rotterdam where he lot in 3 sets to Carlos Alcaraz. He overcame a slow start in Monte-Carlo before thrashing Daniil Medvedev and Grigor Dimitrov.

De Minaur was on target for another convincing victory in the semi-finals, but he couldn't close it out in a 1-6 6-4 7-6 defeat to Lorenzo Musetti. His speed and defensive skills are assets on clay and his form in Monte-Carlo suggests a potential breakthrough.

Arthur Fils (ATP Rank: 14)

Arthur Fils started the year with a quarter-final appearance in Hong Kong and repeated the feat in Indian Wells and Miami.

The young Frenchman beat Alex de Minaur in Barcelona last year and is chance to improve on his run to the quarter-finals.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (ATP Rank: 30)

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is yet to win on the ATP Tour but is showing signs he can break through in 2025. He lost finals in Delray Beach and Acapulco and showed no signs of slowing down on clay.

The Spaniard went on a great run in Monte Carlo, beating Ben Shelton, Jack Draper and Alexei Popyrin on his way to the semi-finals where he went down 7-6 6-4 to Carlos Alcaraz.

Road to the final

Carlos Alcaraz is likely to face Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals, the other seeds in the top half are Stefanos Tsitsipas and Arthur Fils who could cause an upset.

The bottom half of the draw is wide open with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina a chance to reach the semi-finals. Holger Rune has a relatively easy run to the quarter-finals where he is set to meet Casper Ruud.

Verdict

It's hard to go past Carlos Alcaraz, the World No.2 winning in Monte-Carlo last week and the home crowd favourite in Barcelona where he was champion in 2022 and 2023.

He is likely to have to get past Alex de Minaur and Arthur Fils to reach the final. I think Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has a great chance to go deep on the other side of the draw.
