Karen Khachanov vs Cameron Norrie Preview
While Karen Khachanov has clearly been the stronger performer this year and rightfully comes in as the favourite, the fitness concerns that popped up last week leave some question marks around his current condition. That opens the door for Cameron Norrie to potentially pull off an upset if he can put together a solid level of play.
Norrie has been pretty unreliable lately, no doubt about that. But in this case, I’m leaning on Khachanov’s questionable fitness and backing Norrie at a book that pays out on retirement.

Karen Khachanov Form
Karen Khachanov’s 2025 season has followed a familiar pattern of getting drawn into long, tough matches, often coming out on the losing end. That trend carried into the clay swing as well.
He kicked off his clay court campaign at the Monte Carlo Masters last week, where he battled fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev for nearly three hours before falling in three sets.
Khachanov appeared to struggle physically during that match and ended up withdrawing from his doubles match later in the week. That raised some questions about his fitness heading into Barcelona.
How well he has recovered from that physical setback in Monte Carlo will likely play a big role in shaping his chances in Barcelona this week.
He is no stranger to this tournament, having made his debut here back in 2016. Since then, he has returned six times, with his best showing being a quarterfinal run in 2017.

Cameron Norrie Form
Cameron Norrie has already kicked off his Barcelona campaign by coming through the qualifying rounds, picking up wins over Hugo Gaston and Damir Dzumhur. Those victories ended his three-match losing streak on tour.
Once a top-10 player, Norrie captured a Masters title in Indian Wells and made it to the semifinals at Wimbledon.
But a sudden and sustained dip in form and confidence has led to a rough stretch of results and a significant slide in the rankings. He is now hovering dangerously close to falling outside the top 100.
He is in serious need of a big result to rebuild his self-belief and get his career back on track, and Barcelona might just be the right place for it.
The Brit has enjoyed some success here in the past, reaching the quarterfinals in three of his last four appearances, including the most recent edition in 2024, where he defeated Harold Mayot and Roberto Bautista Agut along the way.
Verdict
Khachanov is the favourite with better performance level this year, but his recent fitness issues raise doubts. This gives Norrie a real chance to cause an upset, provided he performs well.
Norrie’s form has been inconsistent, but with Khachanov’s fitness uncertain. I’m backing Norrie, especially in markets paying out on retirement.
