It is pretty clear that Stan Wawrinka’s body is struggling to keep up with the demands of tour-level matches at this point in his career. That said, in this particular matchup, there is a decent chance that issue might not be as much of a factor, given Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is coming off a long week at the Monte Carlo Masters and could be feeling a bit tired and worn out.

Stan Wawrinka has played three matches so far in this year's European clay swing, and all of them have gone the distance. He lost two of those despite getting off to a strong start and taking the opening set.

It is becoming a bit of a theme for the Swiss veteran at this stage of his career. He still has the class to dictate play, but the fitness and stamina to maintain that level from start to finish just are not there anymore.

There is not much that can be done about it either. At 40, these issues come with age, and he has had his fair share of injury troubles in recent years.
