Stan Wawrinka vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Live Stream & Betting Tips - Wawrinka eyes surprise win against a weary Fokina
- Stan Wawrinka faces Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the Barcelona Open.
- Wawrinka's physical limitations could be mitigated by Fokina's fatigue.
- Victory for Wawrinka is possible if he secures the first set.
Stan Wawrinka vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Preview
It is pretty clear that Stan Wawrinka’s body is struggling to keep up with the demands of tour-level matches at this point in his career. That said, in this particular matchup, there is a decent chance that issue might not be as much of a factor, given Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is coming off a long week at the Monte Carlo Masters and could be feeling a bit tired and worn out.
If Wawrinka manages to take the first set, it is hard to see a fatigued Spaniard clawing his way back, which opens the door for a bit of a long-shot win. Of course, it is still a gamble, but one that might just be worth a punt.

Stan Wawrinka Form
Stan Wawrinka has played three matches so far in this year's European clay swing, and all of them have gone the distance. He lost two of those despite getting off to a strong start and taking the opening set.
It is becoming a bit of a theme for the Swiss veteran at this stage of his career. He still has the class to dictate play, but the fitness and stamina to maintain that level from start to finish just are not there anymore.
There is not much that can be done about it either. At 40, these issues come with age, and he has had his fair share of injury troubles in recent years.
As a result, the wins are drying up too. He wrapped up the 2024 season with a 12 and 20 record and has managed only four wins from eight matches so far in 2025. He is now edging closer to falling outside the top 200.
The setbacks are tough, no doubt, but they have not taken away his love for the game. This week, he is back in Barcelona for the first time since 2009, looking to give it another crack.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Overview
- Current rank: 30

- ELO rank: 28
- Season record: 18–9
- Season record on clay: 4–1
- Best result in Barcelona: Quarterfinalist in 2023
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Form
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has carried his top form into the clay season, kicking things off with a bang by making the semifinals at Monte Carlo last week – his first clay tournament of the year.
He only managed two wins on clay through all of 2024, but he picked up four in Monte Carlo alone.
To put things in perspective, he won just 20 matches in total last season and already has 18 wins under his belt this year.
This strong bounceback in 2025, along with some solid results, has done wonders for his ranking. It has helped wipe away the damage from a rough 2024 and pushed him back inside the top 30.
The Spaniard has been a regular in Barcelona over the years, but the results there have been fairly modest.
He has fallen in the qualifying rounds three times, and his best effort so far was a quarterfinal run in 2023.
Verdict
Wawrinka’s body often fades over three sets, but Fokina might not be fresh either after a deep Monte Carlo run.
If Stan snags the first set, a tired Fokina may struggle to respond — making this a risky but tempting longshot play.
